Formula One Ferrari Mount Fuji Offensive

Ferrari is aiming for a 1-2 finish at the Formula One Grand Prix in Japan this weekend.  If Felipe Massa is to retain any hope of capturing the top spot in the Formula One Drivers’ Championship 2008, he must win Sunday’s race.  In order to do that, he’s going to need his team mate, current Formula One World Champion Kimi Raikkonen, behind him fending off attempts to thwart Ferrari’s bid for the championship.

Ferrari has discarded its unique electronic stop/go lights system deployed during pit stops, and gone back to basics with the hand-held lollipop.  Two weeks ago, at the Singapore GP, a malfunction of the system resulted in Massa’s Ferrari leaving the pits with the fuel hose still attached, and a mechanic was knocked to the ground and injured.  This wasn’t the first casualty of the system – last year, Kimi Raikkonen drove over a mechanic’s foot.

Raikkonen is Ferrari’s no 1 driver, but it’s Massa who has brought in the results for the team this year.  I admire Massa’s undeniable talent, but I’m not a Ferrari fan, and I’m backing Lewis Hamilton and McLaren to win and, hopefully, to lead Massa by more than one position.  At the moment, the drivers’ standings have Hamilton in the lead with 84 points, followed by Massa on 77, and in third position is Robert Kubica (BMW Sauber) with 64.

Last year, when we were past the midway point in the season, Hamilton was riding high, and on target to win the 2007 Formula One Drivers’ Championship, but due to a spin during the Chinese Grand Prix, Hamilton waved goodbye to a fairy tale finish for his first season in Formula One.  He lost to Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, by just one point… Ouch! That’s gotta hurt!

Now, it’s 2008 and here we are with just three races remaining til the end of the season and perhaps fewer than that before we know who’ll be crowned this year’s Formula One Champion.

I’m particularly interested in women’s views about Formula One - any female F1 fans out there?
