Formula One Fiasco For Hamilton In Japan

The Formula One Grand Prix in Japan was one of the strangest races I’ve ever watched. I’d stayed up all night to see the race live and I was expecting to enjoy Formula One at its best.

But within moments of the start, Lewis Hamilton’s car was stationary on the track and it was facing the wrong direction. He had pole position but made a poor start, then misjudged the first corner attempt to overtake Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari), and Felipe Massa (Ferrari) crashed into his McLaren, spinning it around.

Hamilton incurred a penalty for hampering Raikkonen, and Massa incurred a penalty for broad siding Hamilton.

Hamilton’s impaired judgement was tempered only by Massa’s bad luck, and after they both ended up towards the back of the field, the race was won by Fernando Alonso for Renault. Hamilton is still leading the Formula One Drivers’ Championship by 84 points to Massa’s 79, but sometimes less flash and more (consistent) dash wins the long term objective, and the two frontrunners have not only Alonso but also Robert Kubica (BMW Sauber) nipping at their heels.

I believe Lewis Hamilton is a Formula One racing phenomenon, in a class with Michael Schumacher, but he’s giving his fans a nail-biting time of it, as he assaults the summit of Formula One.

I dunno whether my poor ol’ nerves can cope………

Like you I stayed up all night just to ensure I was up in the early hours for the race.

I agree with your statement ‘Lewis Hamilton is a Formula One racing phenomenon, in a class with Michael Schumacher,’

One thing does separate them in my mind, if Schumacher starts on Pole you knew that it was more than likely that he was going end the race in the same position. Helped by the fact he honestly had little reliable competition.

You can’t say that about Hamilton (Yet), there are a number of drivers at the moment that are all capable of winning races, and Lewis does make some rash decisions which in my opinion makes the race far more exciting for the spectator.

Good point - and conversely Schumi’s talent was amazing, but sadly with a Ferrari under him it made the races so predictable. When Hamilton spun, I held my head in my hands, simply incredulous that he’d messed up that badly. It is great tho to have the suspense of who’ll be the new champion stretched to the end of the season. :-)
