Lewis Hamilton Is Formula One World Champion!
In the closest fought Formula One Grand Prix I’ve ever watched, Lewis Hamilton has just finished in 5th position for McLaren in the Brazilian Formula One Grand Prix in Interlagos today, and by so doing, has become Formula One World Champion, and the first British champion for 12 years!
So, no podium today, but who cares? He’s the Formula One World Champion - the youngest World Champion in the history of Formula One racing! What a finish to the 2008 season - excitement and tension to the final bend.
I’m all danced out, after leaping up and down like an excited kid, and even crying! It’s amazing how the rheumatism and creaky joints disappear when the brain’s stimulation spikes on something thrilling, the aches and pains are forgotten in the moment!
Frankly, if you’d seen the closing laps of the race, you’d totally understand, because half way through the final lap, Lewis Hamilton was in 6th place, which meant no Championship. It looked as though the race winner, Felipe Massa (Ferrari) had also taken the top spot for 2008. Then, in the last few moments, at the final bend, Lewis pulled it out of the bag by overtaking Timo Glock (Toyota), recapturing 5th place and, with it, the Championship.
Great BBC iPlayer programme about the formative years of Lewis Hamilton titled, “The Billion Dollar Man” can be watched or downloaded at BBC website.
Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton and McLaren, you’ve thrilled us all Summer, and now you’ve clinched it - a worthy 2008 Formula One World Champion.
Comiserations to Felipe Massa whose heart must have broken just seconds after passing the chequered flag, because although he won the Grand Prix, he didn’t just not win the World Championship, he thought he had won - as did the Ferrari team and everyone else at the track! But then came the dagger through his heart, as Lewis Hamilton willed his car past Timo Glock and the crown was his.
Some consolation for Ferrari is that they won the Formula One Constructors’ World Championship.
Formula One Racing and the F1 World Championship is over for another year, so it’s unlikely I’ll be posting about it until the new season starts in March 2009.

It was a good race but was Timo Glock advised to slow right down, he lost so much time in that last half lap or so I find it hard to believe it was purely down to tyre wear.
I am pleased to see we have a British world champion after so long but I do feel for Filipe, I do think that he deserved the championship just as much as Lewis and apart from the fact he drives one of those red cars I would have not been too upset if he had won the championship.

Sceptism about who did what and why is unavoidable with a Championship finish like the Brazilian GP, but I see no gains whatsoever for Toyota that would influence the team to instruct its driver to gift the 5th position to Hamilton.
The other possibility is that he independently made a decision to let Hamilton pass him. But why would he do that? He isn’t British, in fact, he’s an up-and-coming prospective champ himself, and such action could jeopardise his own long-term career, as well as lose him his current drive.
I too felt for Felipe Massa, as his heart visibly broke live on camera. He had done everything right and won the race, but he has only his own team to point the finger at for why he ultimately lost the championship — things like leaving the pits with the fuel pipe trailing in his wake didn’t help!
I wonder how you and I might feel if and when Hamilton himself is driving one of ‘those’ red cars!
Thanks for your input, Greg, let’s take it up again next season.

I dread to think how negatively affected he’d have been psychologically, if he’d lost the championship again, in such a similar pattern to last season. Thankfully, no such concerns now!

A fantastic season for sure, but did he really truly win? Seems to me Timo slowed down to let him win.

But why would he do that when it would jeopardise his own career?

It made me laugh the other day when Gordon Brown felt he needed to get in on the act as he attempted to associate himself with some positive news for a change.

Yep, Nicole Scherzinger is his main squeeze and he’s talking about joining her on tour. Apart from enjoying her company, he’s reported as saying he wants to show her the degree of support that she’s given him in his bid for the F1 championship. Aw, ain’t love grand?
